A Survey of Australian Saxophone Repertoire – The Well Known Composers

Despite large numbers of young saxophonists looking for Australian repertoire and growing numbers of university-trained saxophone teachers, most Australian composers have not written works for saxophone. This is not because they don’t like the saxophone or think that saxophonists won’t do their music justice. It is because the best composers are very busy people with lots of important commissions to write for orchestras, opera companies, Musica Viva, etc. Luckily, many of these composers are willing to allow us to transcribe and perform works which they have written for other instruments. Some have even written new works especially for the saxophone. It is my intention to write in greater detail about those Australian composers who have written lots of works for saxophone in future issues.
