This DVD is the musical tribute to pianist, composer and educator Ellis Marsalis. It was recorded live in 2001 at the University of New Orleans and features Ellis and his four talented musician sons on stage together for the first time. As such it makes a very worthy addition to any musician’s collection.
The concert opens with a brilliant trio arrangement of “the Surrey with a Fringe on Top” demonstrating the tasteful, intelligent and melodic playing Ellis Marsalis is famous for. This track alone is worth the price of the DVD, with virtuosic solos by bassist Roland Guerin and drummer Jason Marsalis.
Branford’s skills on soprano are another highlight of the DVD for reed players. One moment he is blazing away in the style of Coltrane and the next evoking shades of Sidney Bechet in a traditional New Orleans’ style.
Other musical highlights include guest appearances by the charismatic Harry Connick Jr (Ellis’ former student) and trombone virtuoso Lucien Barbarin. Harry and Ellis play a very entertaining two piano version of “Caravan” which demonstrates both artists’ abilities as soloists and accompanists.
An insightful series of interviews are included on the DVD and are worth watching. Ellis and his sons speak candidly about their family life, the concert and the impact of music on their lives. They are joined by Harry Connick Jr who shares his impressions of the family, and the impact they have had on him as a musician growing up in New Orleans in the shadow of the Marsalis’.
Overall this DVD presents an entertaining concert with a distinctly New Orleans flavour. Some of the attempts at creative camera angles can be a little distracting, however the unique nature of the concert and the outstanding quality of the musical performances more than compensate. The musical chemistry between this talented family of musicians is evident and leaves you wondering what took them so long. Watch the DVD and find out for yourself!
